About Elsie

A painting career spanning 20 years has led me through a range of mediums and a tremendous diversity of subjects. Throughout this time colour and light have remained my constant inspiration.

I am also highly motivated by a challenge. The journey of painting what I initially considered ‘too challenging’ is what keeps me hooked.

This could either be a plein air oil in Varanasi or a mural in a Bangkok Pub.

In 2006, I created Attic Studios in Bangkok. The studio became famous for its ‘First Friday of the Month parties’, staying open late and attracting all sorts of characters.

In 2017, I sold Attic Studios and moved to Rayong to build my dream home and art retreat, away from the stresses of Bangkok living.

My painting all starts with a response to a visual experience. I photograph, sketch and make notes. The images evolve in my head and at some point I know it’s time to start painting.

This process can not be forced. Sometimes it takes two weeks, sometimes six months.

Art Retreat

I had a good idea of how I wanted the house to look, but lacked the experience to complete the technical drawings needed. Thankfully, one of my son’s friends was a architect and he help bring my vision to life.

Sketchbook

Sketching is one of my favorite things to do. I have dozens of sketchbooks lying about the Retreat that you can look through for inspiration or ideas in your sketchbook. There are also sketchbooks available for sale in the studio.

“Elsie, we had such an amazing time at your retreat. You’ve inspired the girls. I came home from work and found the children sketching.”

Oil Painting

I fell in love with oil painting early in my art journey. You could say it’s my specialty, although I love playing with all mediums.

“Elsie is a wonderful hostess - breakfast with her in the kitchen is a real joy. After staying just two days, we felt like old family friends.”

Plein Air Painting

Rayong is full of inspiration and natural scenery for Plein Air painting. There’s no better way to spend an afternoon than painting outdoors in nature.

“I stayed at Elsie’s retreat plein air painting for almost two months. It was just a great experience. I hope to go back there in the future.”
